Jyll Bradley – Brigitte (Espalier) was commissioned by Strange Cargo, a vibrant arts company based in Cheriton, Kent for their bi-annual light festival. The work is based on an old design for an espalier – a structure built for supporting growing fruit trees – which are a feature of the surrounding countryside. The work ‘tags’ Strange Cargo’s building, hinting at the energetic arts activities that occur behind the wall and celebrating the woman – Brigitte – who brings it all to life. Situated on a southerly wall, the work acts as a sun-dial, dramatically changing in appearance through the course of the day. By night it becomes a beacon lit by LED.
