Sir Anthony Gormley’s new ROOM unveiled in Mayfair
Sir Antony Gormley unveiled his new inhabitable artwork this week entitled ROOM, for the Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair, scheduled to open in the autumn. ROOM is a giant crouching figure, built on to the Beaumont’s facade.
Darbyshire created high-polished American walnut frames for a number of Gormely’s original drawings which are inside ROOM. The walk-in sculpture hotel suite is shaped like a vault inside, with the ceiling set at a 10 metre height. Gormley said: ‘I take the body as our primary habitat. ROOM contrasts a visible exterior of a body formed from large rectangular masses with an inner experience’.
